Death: What Are You Ready to Release?

Weekly Tarot Reading for September 21–27, 2026

Last week, the Two of Wands asked us to follow the breadcrumbs.

What sparked your curiosity? What did you want more of? What small movement could you make toward the life you were envisioning?

This week, we pull Death.

And maybe the next question isn't Where do I want to go?

Maybe it's:

What can't come with me?

The Astrology of the Week

The timing of the Death card feels especially appropriate because this week contains one of our most recognizable transitions of the year: the Fall Equinox.

On Tuesday, September 22, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, marking the astronomical beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Day and night are close to equal around the equinox, and from here we move into the darker half of the year.

The equinox also marks the Sun's entrance into Libra season, shifting our attention toward balance, relationships, reciprocity, and how we exist alongside others.

Then on Saturday, September 26, we have a Full Moon in Aries.

Full Moons represent culmination and illumination, while Aries brings our attention back to the self: desire, action, independence, instinct, and the courage to move.

With the Sun in Libra opposing the Moon in Aries, we have an interesting question to sit with:

What needs to change in order for me to live more fully as myself while still remaining in relationship with the world around me?

And then there's Death.

The Death Card Isn't Really About literal Death

Death is one of those Tarot cards that tends to make people nervous.

But in Tarot, Death is primarily a card of transition.

Something has reached the end of its cycle.

A season is complete.

A version of ourselves, a relationship dynamic, a belief, a habit, a job, an expectation, or simply a way we've been moving through the world may no longer have the energy required to keep growing.

Death asks us not to cling simply because something is familiar.

It reminds us that endings are part of the natural rhythm of being alive.

The trees don't negotiate with autumn.

They let go.

From Vision to Transformation

Last week's Two of Wands asked us to look toward the horizon.

Maybe you followed something that sparked your interest. Maybe a new idea came through. Maybe you had a conversation, received an invitation, or simply recognized:

I want something different.

That realization is important.

Because once we begin envisioning something new, we often become much more aware of what no longer fits.

You can't always move toward the new while carrying everything from the old.

This week's Death card asks:

What needs to be cleared so that I have the energy to move toward what I'm envisioning?

Not Everything Needs to Become a Transformation Project

I think this distinction matters.

We live in a culture that can turn absolutely everything into self improvement.

Optimize yourself. Reinvent yourself. Become your "next level self."

Sometimes life doesn't need to be transformed.

Sometimes it needs to be lived.

But there are also moments when we can feel that a season has run its course.

And with the literal seasons changing around us this week, you might notice that feeling more strongly.

Maybe you're craving freshness.

Maybe you're tired of repeating something.

Maybe you're ready to stop negotiating with a situation you already know isn't working.

Maybe you simply want more room.

Death doesn't necessarily ask us to burn everything down.

Sometimes it asks us to stop feeding what is already complete.

The Full Moon in Aries: What Feels Liberating?

Saturday's Aries Full Moon adds another layer.

Aries is instinctive. It moves toward what feels alive.

So instead of focusing only on what you need to release, notice what creates a feeling of liberation.

Let Something Become Compost

Nature doesn't waste an ending.

What falls eventually becomes nourishment for something else.

Maybe we can approach our own endings the same way.

The relationship that taught you something.

The job that clarified what you value.

The habit that once protected you.

The version of yourself that got you here.

We don't have to demonize what we're leaving behind in order to outgrow it.

We can appreciate what it gave us... and still recognize that its season is complete.

Your Tarot Practice for the Week

Spend some time with these questions:

What feels complete?

What am I continuing to give energy to simply because it's familiar?

What did last week's Two of Wands reveal about what I want more of?

What would I need to release to create room for that?

Where do I experience a feeling of renewal or liberation?

And perhaps most importantly:

What am I ready to stop feeding?

Death reminds us that an ending isn't empty space.

It's space.

And sometimes space is exactly what we've been asking for.
